Hardcoal Chronicles 40th

Lifetimes & Timelines
The ANTHRACITE PHOTOGRAPHERS*
(Six men spanning five generations and 150 years)
* Throughout the years, many have photographed the region, such as government labor photographer Lewis W. Hine (1874-1940), famous for his images of breaker boys leading to the establishment of child labor laws in the United States. But photographing Anthracite subject matter is not enough. The men listed above have dominated the documentation of their respective timeperiods, covering the inseparable Anthracite coal and rail complex: Well after his time with the DL&W ended in 1919, Watson Bunnell continued his photographic business including pursuit of regional subject matter into the 1940s. Also, George Harvan continued to document regional issues past the closing of Lanscoal in 1972; many of the fine books illustrated with his images are fortunately still available today. The superb book “Illustrating an Anthracite Era” on John Horgan, Jr. by Gwen Percival and Chester Kulesa of the Commonwealth's Anthracite Heritage Museum (Scranton) is currently out of print, but a few precious copies may still be available for purchase on-line. Scott Herring intends to put out his long-awaited full retrospective book for the people of the region after his 50th year behind the lens in 2023. As with all of Scott's Anthracite work, the proceeds will go to support the many various historic preservation projects at home in the Coal Region.
